The Legacy of the Tuskegee Airmen

General Daniel "Chappie" James, Jr., former special assistant to the chief of staff, U.S. Air Force, attended the Tuskegee Institute from September 1937 to March 1942, where he received a Bachelor of Science in physical education and completed civilian pilot training under the government-sponsored Civilian Pilot Training Program. James also worked as a civilian instructor pilot at Tuskegee in the Army Air Corps Aviation Cadet Program until January 1943.
