BUCKLEY SPACE FORCE BASE, Colorado -- Women’s History Month honors and celebrates the significance of women throughout history. Annually observed throughout the month of March, this month commemorates the advancements made by women since its establishment in 1987.
Buckley Space Force Base is staffed by dedicated service members who ensure the mission remains operational, with the Mission Control Station operating 24/7, 365 days a year, manned by highly intelligent, qualified Guardians, Airmen, and mission partners.
On March 1st, 2024, an all-women's operations crew incorporating members from the 2nd Space Warning Squadron, as well as teammates from the 11th Space Warning Squadron, gathered to work a shift together in honor of Women's History Month.
“We worked today’s shift in reverence and gratitude to those who have done this job before us without the recognition that our crew got today and to encourage the women who will come after us that they are not alone in their endeavors,” remarked U.S. Space Force Capt. Heart, 2 Space Warning Squadron Alpha Flight Commander.
According to the all-women’s crew, many of them have not met a female service member until they joined the service themselves. They explain that demonstrating to young women that wearing the uniform and serving is attainable, despite women’s historical challenges, which makes the effort of extra shifts invaluable.
“Hundreds of women who have come before us, despite the discomfort or isolation they may have felt, chose to use their presence to create a place that is safer, more equitable, and more accessible to women,” said Heart.
Composed of highly skilled and accomplished women from diverse backgrounds, the 2 SWS and 11 SWS all-women’s operations crew embodies resilience, determination, and excellence. Through their steadfast and collaborative efforts, this dynamic team epitomizes a remarkable leap forward in highlighting the role of women who are a part of the critical 24/7 mission in safeguarding national security.
