BUCKLEY AIR FORCE BASE, Colorado -- The 460th Space Wing’s Champions are continuing their ongoing initiative to review the wing’s strategic intent in an effort to develop and align the wing’s mission, vision, and operational objectives with direction provided by higher headquarters.
Champions are individuals who determine operational objectives and specific tasks for squadrons and flights.
The priorities include: Mission Excellence, Airmen and Families, and Installation Readiness, with the Champions split into groups based upon these priorities.
“While our Champions give voice and energy to these efforts, the real work is done at the unit level by our subject matter experts,” said Col. Rob Riegel, 460th SW vice commander.
The Wing’s Champions consist of members from wing and group leadership along with the inspector general’s office.
The wing’s Champions are Col. Troy Endicott, 460th Space Wing commander, Col. Rob Riegel, 460th SW vice commander, Chief Master Sgt. Tamar Dennis, 460th SW command chief, Col. Robert Hutt, 460th Operations Group commander, Chief Master Sgt. Charles Shurchay, 460th OG superintendent, Col. Trevor Wentlandt, 460th Mission Support Group commander, Chief Master Sgt. Shelley Haskett, 460th MSG superintendent, Col. Shannon Phares, 460th Medical Group commander, Chief Master Sgt. David Denton, 460th MDG superintendent, Mr. Robert Myhre, 460th SW director of staff, Lt. Col. Tracie Barrett, 460th SW inspector general, Ms. Pamela Flowers, deputy inspector general, Mr. Kevin Stocking, wing plans and programs director, and Mr. Ben Oberson, 460th Command Post operations security manager.
“Our overall goal is to make sure the 460th Space Wing is on the right path to ensure we’re meeting the commander’s intent and keeping up our excellence that we’ve been doing here,” said Denton.
For example, the Champions have focused on many topics, including funding quality of life initiatives, sustaining Airmen’s individual medical readiness at less than 5 percent, implementing Air Force Space Command’s Space Mission Force construct amongst the crew forces, construction of the large vehicle inspection point, and enhancing spiritual resiliency of Airmen.
Upon finalizing the Wing’s operational objectives and tactical tasks, the Champions will determine set measures of performance as to how each of these tasks will be tracked and report progress made at bi-monthly Champion lunches. Each Champion oversees the tasks assigned to his/her group and the progress made as their units help accomplish these tasks.
“By breaking our strategic goals into tactical tasks, we allow our teams to focus their efforts on achieving measurable outcomes,” said Riegel. “This is all aimed at improving our base, benefitting our Airmen and families, and executing our mission better than ever.”
