BUCKLEY AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. -- The daily operations of the 460th Space Wing at Buckley Air Force Base, Colorado, comprises the second key component of the Air Force mission – Space.
While members of Buckley’s total force team analyze the data received every moment of the day so they can provide warning and surveillance for America and its allies, another vital aspect of its mission is the protection of Team Buckley’s personnel and resources.
Posted at every entrance throughout the base and mobilized all around Buckley’s area of operation are members of the 460th Security Forces Squadron.
These skilled Airmen are first responders there should an emergency arise. They are also the ones ready to enforce the laws and intervene as necessary to maintain the public’s safety.
“Security Forces is a hybrid organization comprised of force protection, law enforcement, police services, access control, antiterrorism, criminal investigations, drug detection, weapons and tactics skills development, and many other capabilities working in concert to defend the most powerful protection level assets in our nation's arsenal,” said U.S. Air Force Maj. Matthew Brill, the 460th SFS commander.
“Whether it is verifying credentials at an entry control point, enforcing traffic regulations on installation roadways, or responding to a cry for help in base housing or a work center, Defenders work around the clock tirelessly to ensure the mission, and you, are safe and secure,” added Brill.
They are a team comprised of active-duty, civilian, contractors, and the 140th SFS from the Colorado Air National Guard, and they are not a force to be reckoned with.
They are armed, trained, and vigilant.
“We are the largest career field in the Air Force, and we are charged with protecting high-valued, warfighting assets and air bases around world,” remarked Chief Master Sgt. Max Van Ausdal, the 460th SFS manager. “Wherever the Air Force needs us, we are fully prepared to defend at all cost!”

“The 460th Space Wing is host to a diverse set of missions that cover the full spectrum of Air, Space, and Cyber Space,” said Col. Shawn Thompson, the 460th Mission Support Group commander. “We have joint, interagency, and international partners all working together to make these diverse missions happen for our national defense. None of those missions are possible without our ability to secure the installation and the critical assets on Buckley.
“Our security forces Airmen do a superb job of securing and defending our base 24/7/365 in all kinds of conditions without fail,” remarked Thompson. “SFS Police Week provides many opportunities for Team Buckley to come out and show our appreciation and support for our Defenders.”
