Col. Trevor Wentlandt took command of the 460th Mission Support Group from Col. Shawn Thompson, July 12, 2018, on Buckley Air Force Base, Colorado.

Col. Troy Endicott, 460th Space Wing commander, presided over the ceremony and transferred the guidon from Thompson to Wentlandt, symbolizing the change of command.

As part of their arrival, each new commander is asked a series of questions to show Team Buckley their personality. Here’s Wentlandt's First Five:

Who have you modeled your leadership after?

I’ve been blessed with having outstanding leaders and commanders from which I have been able to emulate my leadership after. Men and women such as Col. Les Brockman, Maj. Gen. Roosevelt Mercer, Col. Kevin Booth, Gen. David Goldfein, Col. Anne Konnath and many others. There are many lessons that can be learned by studying each leader’s individual leadership style both in things to do but also in things to avoid.

What do you believe is necessary to support a space warning mission?

First and foremost, it’s the realization that the 460th Space Wing’s mission is absolutely a no-fail strategic missile warning mission, and this great responsibility applies to everyone on this wing. We all play an integral part in the successful execution of this critical mission, and it requires a complete team effort to make this possible. As commanders, we’re responsible for establishing and drawing the link between what our Airmen do on a daily basis and how significant of an impact that has on the overall success of this wing’s no-fail mission.

Is there a book or a movie you think all Airmen should read or watch?

I am a huge history buff and am currently reading The Last Lion, by Manchester and Reid. This biography about Winston Churchill, the English Prime Minister during World War II and parts of the Cold War, is not only a great read but it also highlights the leadership style of a great and important person in history. The key reading recommendation that I would make to all Airmen is to read biographies about history’s great leaders or other individuals that they admire. They offer priceless insight into how that person was able to lead in various situation and will provide invaluable information to Airmen on how to navigate through life’s various obstacles.

If you could have a lifetime of free food from any restaurant, what would it be?

Without a doubt, Old Chicago. I love their pizza, burgers and I’m huge fan of their Italian nachos.

You and your family get a one way ticket to any destination of your choice. Where would you go?

A couple years ago, my wife Karen, the boys and I spent a week in Rome. It was such an amazing experience. We literally walked everywhere – from the Colosseum to St. Peter’s Basilica, all the way to the Pantheon to the Catacombs of Rome. There was so much to take in and see that we did not want to miss anything by driving. Simply put, it was awesome! I would love to explore another ancient city with my family such as London, Mumbai, Jerusalem and Alexandria. You name it and I am ready to go!
