BUCKLEY AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. -- Hiking and camping may seem standard to the average Colorado resident, but the 460th Force Support Squadron Outdoor Recreation Center on Buckley Air Force Base seems to take the standard and turn it up a few notches.
“We help individuals and families take full advantage of what Colorado has to offer in order to boost morale of everyone stationed here and anyone else associated with the base,” said William Cecil Link III, 460th FSS ODR assistant supervisory recreation specialist.
The ODR just completed one of its biggest trips of the season at Camp Hale, near Minturn, Colorado. Activities included things such as hiking and fishing but also some more extreme activities. Participants that decided to partake in the extreme activities found themselves climbing on the side of cliffs, speeding through trees on suspension bikes, crawling over rocks and driving over terrain that campers described as “pretty gnarly.”
But even for the standard activities that were offered at the camping trip, there were plenty of hikes and fishing in the nearby lakes. The location of Camp Hale is very scenic according to campers and also has a history as an U.S. Army training grounds where troops were trained mountain warfare in the 1940’s.
For Team Buckley members that missed this trip, there are still many other activities and services the ODR hosts. The ODR provides rentals of everything needed for most outdoor activities. Instead of waiting for the next trip to do extreme activities such as rock climbing, the center provides the gear to create your own adventure.
“We offer so many activities such as mountain biking, hiking, skiing and pretty much anything with the outdoors,” said Anthony Difronzo, 460th Force Support Squadron Outdoor Recreation Center recreation assistant. “The majority of what people know about us barely scratches the surface of what we do.”
For those who aren’t fans of the outdoors and extreme activities, the recreation center is a source for discount admission to water parks, baseball games and numerous other attractions.
