Buckley prepares for inspection through exercise Published March 14, 2012 By Tech. Sgt. Christian Michael 460th Space Wing BUCKLEY AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. -- The 460th Space Wing is hosting a series of exercises over the next couple of weeks in preparation for an upcoming combined unit inspection in May. These exercises range from dealing with simulated chemical and biological attacks to injured personnel and other disruptions to normal operations. The upcoming CUI is designed to prepare the base for wartime conditions, using 24-hour operations and scenarios that push Buckley Airmen to be prepared for anything. "Our efforts to prepare for the CUI, and then for war, must make us flexible, adaptive and ready to respond to anything an enemy might throw our way," said Col. Dan Dant, 460th Space Wing commander. "That's why learning to deal with obstacles is vital to completing our mission at home and overseas." Scheduled for approximately every other week until the CUI, exercises will continue to cover every possible worst-case scenario Buckley Airmen might face. "Exercises are opportunities for our Airmen to demonstrate their proficiency, for commanders to view their personnel in action and to validate and refine functional operational procedures," said Kevin Stocking, 460th Space Wing Plans and Programs director. "We push Airmen through scenarios that force them to adapt to rapidly changing environments. We strive to place our personnel in situations which require them to make decisions, respond to emergencies and anticipate what the 'bad guy or girl' may do next." Readiness exercises are common to all military installations and prepare service members to get the job done quickly and effectively to get them home from war. "Exercises ensure first and foremost that the wing is ready to respond to any contingency with confidence and skill," said Stocking. This week's exercises have already disrupted gate flow and changed normal business hours, and could continue through the end of the week. Residents should be aware that typical traffic patterns around and on Buckley might vary from weekly norms.
