As the temperature decreases here and in surrounding areas, we remind Airmen coming to Buckley Air Force Base from warmer climates to pay attention to driving dangers.

Winter driving can be very hazardous due to icy roads and very limited visibility. It is important to stay tuned to weather conditions and remember to plan trips very carefully.

"Always plan ahead and carry the proper safety equipment," said Charles Walden, 460th Space Wing Safety Office technician. "It is important to carry spare items such as a coat, gloves and blankets just in case of car failure, especially when heading into the mountains."

"Having snow tires is also another great way to help contend with driving through the snow," said Chris Smith, 460th Space Wing Safety Office technician.

Even without snow tires, there are things Airmen can do to make their drive safer.

"Use extra precaution and practice driving in an area where there are no vehicles or obstacles to see exactly what needs to be done in case traction is lost," said Smith. "It helps to become familiar with how the vehicle will respond in these types of conditions."

"All drivers can benefit from slowing down and increasing awareness during the winter weather. Let's all keep winter driving safety in mind and help Team Buckley get through the season with no accidents," said Smith.

"The safety office also provides a personal vehicle winter safety checklist to help individuals keep track of the areas on their vehicles that may require maintenance," said Walden.
