Col. Dant leads service members in motorcycle safety Published Sept. 9, 2011 By Airman Nigel R. Sims 460th Space Wing Public Affairs BUCKLEY AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. -- Team Buckley's Col. Daniel Dant, 460th Space Wing commander, along with other service members, completed a Motorcycle Safety Ride, on 31 Aug. While enjoying this ride, all Team Buckley personnel were required to adhere to all safety regulations and standards. Senior leaders also encouraged motorcyclists to continue to be safe over this upcoming Labor Day weekend. "Motorcyclists are particularly vulnerable," said Gen. William Shelton, Air Force Space Command commander. "As I said in my summer kick-off message, there are many goofball drivers who aren't looking for you, and the consequences can be severe. Be defensive at all times and wear your protective gear." "We are coming up on a long weekend and it's a good opportunity for us to practice safety," said Dant. "Starting Oct. 1 we're going to require reflective vests," said Dant. "This will assist the gate guards who get a lot of people arguing with them on proper protective equipment. We're going to lead the next change to the AFI by requiring reflective protective gear - not orange t-shirts, proper protective gear." Air Force Instruction 91-207 contains all the rules of engagement that must be implemented prior to climbing onto a motorcycle. Paragraph 4.6 states that all military personnel at anytime, on or off the Air Force Installation, in a duty status, who operate a motorcycle on a roadway, and all operators of government-owned motorcycles, are required to attend and complete an approved motorcycle rider education course. Those seeking to become motorcycle operators on roadways must comply with the skills training, permit and license requirements of state, territory, host nation or applicable Status of Forces agreements.
