BUCKLEY AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. - -- Members of Buckley's 460th Medical Group received In Place Patient Decontamination training Aug. 18.

The purpose of IPPD is to provide medical decontamination to patients who are not otherwise able to do so for themselves. A patient's ailments can range from loss of sight and heavy bleeding to being fully unconscious.

"I would definitely suggest this training," said Staff Sgt. Tiffany Fisher, 460th Medical Operations Squadron dental assistant. "Instead of requiring one person to know how to fix the tent or drain the water heater, we trained everybody on about how to do every job, and it makes things go much smoother."

The goal of the training is to provide the IPPD team with in-depth experience that allows them to construct a decontamination facility with at least four personnel in protective gear to reach mission capable status by being able to receive patients. All this must be done within 15 minutes, allowing other medical personnel to bring the facility to fully functional status within 20 minutes of the emergency notification.

The training was provided by DECON, LLC, lead by training manager Tom Bocek. "We had a great showing from Buckley, Holloman, Patrick and Laughlin Air Force Base," said Bocek. "There is a lot of work to get done in 15 minutes and they did it in six minutes eight seconds today."
