Being safe during the critical days of summer

During this time many members of Team Buckley will plan vacations that will expose themselves, and their families, to increased risks on roads, rivers, lakes and beaches. As a result, risks go up dramatically during this time of year.

As we continue through the critical days of summer, base leadership is urging all members of team Buckley to remain safe, and try diligently to avoid any mishaps or injury possibilities so that we can get all our troops through the summer safe and sound.

"So far this summer, the Air Force has had seven incidents," said Lt. Col. Beverly Sloan, Chief of Safety for the 460th Space Wing. "Every member of Buckley plays a valuable part in keeping our family safe. It is everyone's responsibility to not endanger your life or the lives of others by making poor decisions."

So far this summer these fatalities have included three motorcycle accidents, two sports and recreation related, one pedestrian and one falling from a two-story building. There are approximately 10 more weeks to go before the critical days of summer end.

"Everyone needs to adhere to safety practices and principles and risk management just as much at home, as they do at work," said Sloan. "People don't really think about the seriousness of safety until something happens, and we want people to think about it and understand the seriousness of safety in a proactive fashion before something happens.

"There are a lot of things that can happen to someone in the realm of safety that can totally change their life forever," said Sloan. "Once it's done it's done, no going back."

"Some accidents are going to happen," said Sloan. "That's why we call them accidents but there are some things that happen that we can prevent, such as, riding a motorcycle without a helmet, things of those sorts."
