At Basic Military Training, every Airman learned to don their protective mask after hearing "Gas, gas, gas!" During the upcoming Operational Readiness Inspection, Buckley Airmen will not only show the inspectors these skills, but will also be expected to perform their job while in Mission Oriented Protective Posture 4 conditions. A new class is helping them prepare to meet this expectation.

After processing through the last three exercise deployment lines, more than 130 Airmen reported to Ability to Survive and Operate (ATSO) training. In the morning, they learned about unexploded ordnance recognition, post-attack reconnaissance, weapons familiarizations, self aid and buddy care, chemical protection techniques and personnel decontamination techniques.

"The training gave us an opportunity to refresh skills in advance of the ORI," said Staff Sgt. Ashley Tiffin, a recent attendee. Her overall impression of the training - "It was awesome."

After lunch, Airmen donned their chemical protection suits and responded to several attack scenarios. They were required to use the skills they just learned by performing SABC on injured and performing PAR after each simulated attack.

"We are all warriors and ATSO training re-enforces those basic warfighting skills necessary to not only meet the challenges of the upcoming inspection, but also for future deployments and operations downrange," said Lt. Col. William Morrison, 460th Mission Support Group Deputy Commander. "I know that every Airman who passes through ATSO training walked away with the required skills to support the Air Force mission in any combat environment."
