Editor's Note: This story is the first in a series on Team Buckley's fourth annual "Biggest Loser" competition.

Registration for Team Buckley's fourth annual "Biggest Loser" competition will continue through Jan. 27. The event will allow all active duty military members, Defense Department civilians, retirees and dependants 18 years of age and older to compete against each other while jump-starting a healthy change in their lifestyles.

The Buckley Fitness Center is teaming up with Health and Wellness Center to run the annual event modeled after the hit television namesake by providing voluntary classes throughout the program to help educate and encourage participants in cardiovascular conditioning, strength and endurance training. This information, paired with good eating habits, is designed to promote healthy and long lasting weight loss.

"The ultimate goal is for people to make fitness a lifestyle," said Louis Richard, Buckley Fitness Center recreation assistant. "If we only have one person that learns this, then we have done our part."

Beginning, mid-point and finishing weigh-ins are Feb. 1, Feb. 26 and March 26, respectively, 11 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. at the HAWC. The program runs from Feb. 1 through March 26.

The winners of the male and female categories will be determined by the largest decrease in body fat percentage rather than number of pounds lost.

In addition to the voluntary classes, participants can also utilize any of the free group exercise classes offered daily at the Fitness Center. Classes include yoga, cycling, body sculpting, functional fitness and step interval aerobics.

All participants are eligible to win prizes.
