Explosions might be heard as base cleans up old ranges Published Jan. 19, 2010 BUCKLEY AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. -- Over the next several months, the Air Force will be investigating closed firing ranges located on Buckley Air Force Base. This effort is part of the Environmental Restoration Program at the base and is under the Military Munitions Response Program. It is being conducted in coordination with U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment. The MRRP investigation activities will consist of electromagnetic surveys to identify potential unexploded ordnance. The teams will then dig up these objects and determine whether or not they are UXO or munitions related. Explosives ordnance demolition experts will dispose of all excavated UXOs on-site. Where possible the UXOs will be moved to a remote location within the range for demolition. However, controlled in-place explosions may be required for some UXOs considered too unstable to move. In either case, occasional explosions may be heard on the base throughout the period of clearance. All clearance and demolition activities will occur during daylight hours only.
