Buckley Airman brings artistic skills to Bldg. 730 walls Published Nov. 12, 2009 By 1st Lt. Cody Hawkins 460th Space Wing Public Affairs BUCKLEY AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. -- A familiar photograph of three firefighters hoisting up an American flag in front of the rubble of the twin towers following the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks in New York City is now being depicted in a painting by a Buckley Airman in Bldg. 730. The artist, Staff Sgt. Melody Tucker, an Air Force Reservist with the 460th Space Communications Squadron communications focal point, says the painting is to honor those who died that day and to also bring life to what she saw as the boring, gray walls of the Comm Squadron. "I thought the building was a little bland," said Sergeant Tucker. "So I thought I'd bring a little color to it." Sergeant Tucker has created over a dozen paintings in the Comm Squadron since March of 2008. From the New York City firefighters to the Airman's Creed and the future commander's coin, Sergeant Tucker has been busy. "She's done a great job," said Lt. Col. Delbert Jones, 460th Space Communications Squadron commander. "Her paintings have really added color to these walls." Sergeant Tucker's work appears to be quite in demand. "I'd say I have a waiting list of about a half a dozen paintings," she said. Sergeant Tucker says it can take her anywhere from two days to three weeks to complete one of her paintings. Her current work is expected to take about two weeks total to finish. Prior to her Air Force career, Sergeant Tucker lent her artistic talents to the Navy for seven years.
