460th MDG tests readiness

Buckley Air Force Base, Colo. --  The 460th Space Wing, in conjunction with local emergency response teams, recently held an exercise to test response times, and to validate their medical contingency response plan.

Throughout the day, the medical group, Buckley Air Force Base Fire and Emergency Services, and the Rural Metro Ambulance Service provided realism by transporting "patients" and by working with patient administration personnel.

The exercise had three objectives:
To assess the capability of the Medical Group to respond to a chemical, nuclear or biological event; to assess communication capabilities within and among Buckley's Home Station Medical Response Teams, and to assess collaboration with the community, both base and civilian, for a CBRNE response.

"The goal is to overwhelm the MDG personnel and assigned equipment by presenting 100 patients to care for in a mass-casualty event simulating the fog, friction and chaos that we would need to operate in should an on-base terrorist event occur," said Master Sgt. Tiffaney Brooks, 460th Medical Group. "Feedback from the Air Force Space Command exercise team and MDG members was positive."

Though the medical emergency response capability assessment and training is only conducted once at each base, the 460th MDG plans on incorporating the MERCAT format into their training and regular exercise schedule.

All active duty medical personnel received training and were assigned to specific medical contingency response teams. Maj. Paul Morton, Tech. Sgt. Ryan Harding and Staff Sgt. Romulus Darden were recognized as Outstanding Performers during the exercise.
