Be aware of domestic violence Published Oct. 23, 2008 By Dr. Anant Jain Family Advocacy Outreach Manager BUCKLEY AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. -- Although October, the month of Domestic Violence Awareness, is almost over, people should still keep their eyes and ears open for signs of domestic violence. Domestic violence is a pattern of behavior where one person in a relationship tries to gain power and control over his or her partner through fear and intimidation. This can take the form of threats or actually using physical, emotional or sexual maltreatment. Physical maltreatment includes hitting, punching, kicking, burning or any other means by which one partner physically hurts the other. Emotional maltreatment includes shaming, ridiculing or name-calling that leads to significant psychological distress or an abusive act which interferes with the victim's ability to function. Sexual maltreatment occurs if a partner forces or coerces the other to engage in a sexual act against his or her will. The 460th Space Wing has a zero-tolerance policy toward domestic violence. Every member of Team Buckley is required to report domestic violence. Family Advocacy and the Airman and Family Readiness Center promote opportunities to create awareness among military members and their families regarding the impact of domestic violence and its relationship to mission readiness.
