Airmen from Buckley Air Force Base donated their time to the people of a northern Colorado farm town, June 12, to help clean up the aftermath of a tornado that hit this town, about 60 miles north of Denver, on May 22.

The E-F2 or E-F3 tornado killed one person, injured more than 100 others, closed Interstate 25 in northern Colorado, knocked out power to over 60,000 people and damaged 596 homes.

More than 30 Airmen from across the base stepped up and donated more than 200 man-hours after hearing a plea for help from residents. Buckley members also contributed clothing, food, household items and more than $5,000 to the recovery effort.

The volunteers cleaned parks and common areas, removed shingles from houses, tree stumps from yards and delivered furniture to families who lost everything.

"I'm really proud of everyone being able to come together and help out," said 2nd Lt. Michael, 2nd Space Warning Squadron, who coordinated the volunteer clean up. "We all have our own plans, but to be able to put those plans aside for something bigger than us is great. Windsor is a part of our extended community and we just wanted to help. It made us all feel great to get up there and help out the people of Windsor. I met some great people and it feels good to know I played a small part in helping them return to a normal life.

"Those of us who have been there and have seen the devastation first hand know that Windsor is far from being fully recovered," the lieutenant added.
