Federal agencies to reduce energy consumption by 30 percent Published Jan. 8, 2008 By Staff Sgt. Sanjay Allen 460th Space Wing Public Affairs BUCKLEY AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. -- The Air Force has made it a goal to reduce energy usage by 30 percent and water usage by 16 percent by 2015. To accomplish this goal, the President signed Executive Order 13423 mandating federal agencies improve their energy efficiency by three percent annually through the end of fiscal year 2015, or by 30 percent by the end of fiscal year 2015, relative to the baseline of the agency's energy use in fiscal year 2003. Also, beginning this fiscal year, agencies will reduce water consumption by two percent annually, relative to the baseline of the agency's water consumption in fiscal year 2007, through the end of fiscal year 2015, or 16 percent by the end of fiscal year 2015. "It is the wing's goal to reduce utility payments by $300,000 in fiscal year 2008," according to 2nd Lt. Christopher Mayor from the 460th Civil Engineer Squadron. Lieutenant Mayor said people can conserve everywhere. They can conserve at work and at home. By doing simple things such as turning off lights, computer monitors, and other electrical equipment it will reduce the amount of energy used. Shutting off water sources and making sure there are no water leaks will also reduce water usage. There are many things that the base population can do to help. Some include: -- Turn off lights in unoccupied rooms. -- Turn off office equipment when not in use or at the end of the day. -- Reduce the number of personal refridgerators, coffee makers and microwaves. -- Educate co-workers about how to reduce energy usage.
