Navy Petty Officer 1st Class Dennis Durst, Navy Operational Support Center, Denver Published Oct. 3, 2007 Star Performer -- Navy Petty Officer 1st Class Dennis Durst, Navy Operational Support Center, Denver, is Team Buckley's Star Performer for the week of Oct. 5 - 11. Time in Service: 22 years Duty Title: Corpsman, Funeral Honor Guard Hometown: Lake City, Minn. Hobbies: Running, cooking big feasts, food tasting and more running. How do your day-to-day duties contribute to mission success? As a Funeral Honor Guard, I represent the Navy and the nation to families at funerals. We conduct the flag folding and present the national ensign to the family. I have been told many times by the families how important and meaningful it is for us to be there. I see our actions as a way to close out military service and as a thank you for their service to our country. If you could change one thing about the Navy what would it be? I would like to see an incentive program in the physical readiness testing. For example, if you get an outstanding high on your test, you would receive a monetary bonus while serving as motivation for sailors to become more fit. What has been your most memorable experience in the Navy? 1. Coordinating the return of MIA Robert Keller to his resting place at Ft Logan. 2. Going to Kuwait to support the Marines and living in the desert at 135 degrees. 3. Being a part of Denver Funeral Honor Guard and attending 2,195 funerals. 4. On a snowy day at Ft Logan Cemetery, my team attended nine services because the storm kept the Army from coming up from Ft Carson. Duties, responsibilities, and accomplishments: My duties include corpsman duties, coordinating funerals for northern Colorado, training reservists in funeral detail, and participating in 2,195 funerals in the last six years.
