Airman Julia Montoya, a ceremonial guardsman with the Buckley Space Force Base Mile High Honor Guard, carries out her duties with focus and attention to detail, ensuring proper honors are rendered to those who have served.

Whether standing at attention during a funeral, folding a flag at a retirement ceremony, or presenting the colors at a public event, she works alongside her team to execute each ceremony with precision and respect.

“I’m a firm believer that everyone should hold themselves to high standards because it’s a trickle-down effect,” she said. “If we slack, others will see it and follow suit. Embodying high standards ensures the readiness and success of the whole organization.”

When Montoya was first asked to join the honor guard, she wasn’t sure what to expect. She was inspired by her senior enlisted leader who explained to her that he regretted not joining when he had the chance, and that is what motivated her to join.

As Montoya gained experience, she found herself relying less on conscious effort. “After a while, it just comes naturally,” she said. “Occasionally, someone will go out of their way to thank you for your professionalism. It makes you take a step back and remember how important it is to always give your best.”

Honor guard’s mission demands a sharp focus on detail, whether at funerals or major ceremonies. From the angle of your salute to checking for lint on your uniform, training your eye to notice these details are invaluable for a ceremonial guardsman.

This precision reflects the foundation of military excellence, a commitment echoed by senior leaders across the force.

“We will revive the warrior ethos and restore trust in our military,” said Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth. “Our standards will be high, uncompromising, and clear. The strength of our military is our unity and our shared purpose.”

Reflecting on her time in the Honor Guard, Montoya is grateful for the experience. “I feel extremely lucky and grateful to have been a part of this team,” she said. “I truly feel I am a better person and Airman after this experience.”
