Buckley Space Force Base’s Information Technology Flight recently upgraded the base wide phone system, transitioning from traditional phone lines to Voice over Internet Protocol.

Since February 2025, crews have been working hard to replace nearly 4,000 phones across the installation. This transition will be completed by the end of June 2025. The new system allows phone calls to be made via broadband internet connection, offering numerous advantages over the previous phone lines.

What is VoIP?

VoIP, short for Voice over Internet Protocol, works by converting your voice into digital data packets and sending them over the internet instead of using traditional copper phone lines.

Why the Upgrade?

Buckley SFB transitioned to VoIP to reduce costs and improved scalability. Not only are VoIP calls more cost effective, especially for long distance calls, but maintenance is significantly more affordable.

“Buckley’s upgrade to VOIP ensures employees can be connected to the network seamlessly and will ultimately lower call costs and reduce maintenance expenses,” said Gabriel Sanchez, Operating Location Mission Support Group Information Technology Specialist.

Ultimately, VoIP will provide our members with more flexibility and significant cost savings across the installation. Additionally, this system provides a power backup to ensure there is no mission stoppage in the event of a network interruption. By upgrading to a more internet efficient system, Buckley SFB is equipped to improve communication capabilities and enhance operational readiness.
