Buckley Space Force Base is investing in the well-being of its Airmen and Guardians with the "Best S.E.L.F." (Shape Up, Eat Right, Live Well, Fit to Fight) program. Launched recently in June 2025, this comprehensive workshop provides practical strategies for improving nutrition, physical activity, sleep, and stress management.

Developed by the Air Force Health Promotions team, Best S.E.L.F. aims to provide valuable resources for service members seeking to meet height-to-weight ratio and body composition requirements. While designed to support those striving to meet fitness standards, the program is open to all personnel interested in enhancing their overall health and wellness.

The Best S.E.L.F. workshop consists of three key sessions:

  1. Nutrition & Diet: Learn the fundamentals of healthy eating and how to make informed dietary choices to fuel your body for peak performance.
  2. Physical Activity & Exercise: Discover effective exercise techniques, create a personalized fitness plan, and learn how to incorporate physical activity into your daily routine.
  3. Stress & Sleep: Master mindfulness techniques and stress management strategies to improve sleep quality and overall mental well-being.

“The Best S.E.L.F. workshop offers educational tools to participants to teach them how to improve their overall health by being more physically active, focusing on their nutrition, and practicing Mindfulness techniques to improve their sleep,” said Christina Grooms, Integrated Resilience Office Program Manager. “Incorporating these techniques learned from the class into everyday life will help reduce overall stress symptoms members are experiencing and help them live a healthier life.”

Health Promotions Coordinator Amy Szwerluga highlights the positive impact the S.E.L.F. program has had on Team Buckley thus far. “I am mainly seeing an increased interest by our active-duty population in utilizing the resources available to them for health improvement,” she stated. “I am hopeful that as the program progresses, we will see more people improving their body composition scores and fitness requirements in general.”

Looking ahead, Szwerluga plans to expand the program to accommodate the diverse needs of Team Buckley. Future initiatives include offering specialized sessions for individual units, particularly those with shift workers, and providing access to recorded versions and TEAMS options for greater flexibility.
