BUCKLEY SPACE FORCE BASE, Colo. -- U.S. Space Force Col. Eamon Murray assumed command of Space Base Delta 2 from Col. Heidi Dexter during a change of command ceremony on July 10, 2025.
In a symbolic moment during the ceremony, Dexter relinquished command by surrendering the Space Base Delta 2 guidon. Presiding officer, Lt. General David N. Miller, Jr., commander of Space Operations Command, presented the guidon to Murray, formally entrusting him with the leadership of SBD 2.
The guidon exchange is a time-honored military tradition, symbolizing the transfer of authority and responsibility from one commander to another. The guidon itself represents the unit's spirit, history, and accomplishments. By accepting it, Murray formally accepted command and showed his commitment to SBD 2's mission.
In his remarks, Miller highlighted Dexter and her team's achievements during her time leading Buckley Space Force Base, commending Dexter as an exceptional leader for her accomplishments.
“Our installations are the backbone of space operations and Heidi has done a marvelous job ensuring Buckley is the warfighting platform that we need,” said Miller. “She has also been instrumental in building partnerships across the Aurora community and within Buckley Space Force Base.”
Miller extended a warm welcome to Murray, while also setting the stage for continued success as the new commander.
“I'm thrilled to welcome Col Murry to Team Buckley. His unique qualifications as a combat-ready Guardian make him the ideal leader for this team,” said Miller. “I'm confident that he will lead this team to the next stage of their already impressive journey.”
Dexter warmly welcomed Murray and his family to Team Buckley, marking the transition while sharing her own appreciation for serving at the base.
“To the servicemembers of Space Base Delta 2, you inspire me, you have met every challenge with professionalism and grace. This delta is the foundation that makes space operations happen,” said Dexter. “Colonel Murray is taking command of an elite team with experience and vision.”
During his first address, Murray shared his commitment to the mission, highlighting his desire to continue developing a warfighting support team.
“Colonel Dexter set an incredible standard of excellence, and I am honored to continue strengthening Buckley’s position as a hub of strategic space operations. This team plays a vital role in defending the homeland through advanced space operations as part of the joint force,” said Murray. “I look forward to working alongside the servicemembers and community leaders who make Buckley’s mission possible.”
SBD 2 serves Active Duty, National Guard, Reserve and retired personnel throughout the Front Range community, and falls under the direction of the Department of the Air Force and U.S. Space Force for its day-to-day operational mission supporting the National Defense Strategy.
