The Career Intermission Program provides military members an opportunity to put their active-duty careers on pause while attending to others needs such as pregnancy, family matters or professional advancement.

According to the Department of the Air Force, the program provides the program provides select Airmen the opportunity for a one-time, temporary transition from active duty to the Individual Ready Reserve to meet personal or professional needs outside the service while providing a mechanism for seamless return to active duty. The long-term intent of this program is to retain the valuable experience and training of top performing Airmen that might otherwise be lost by permanent separation. Selection is limited by statute to 20 officers and 20 enlisted members during each calendar year, with no set quota per component.

Airmen will be allowed one to three years of leave from active-duty and will receive a monthly stipend of one-fifteenth of their monthly pay. They will also be able to keep their healthcare benefits, including those for their dependents while away from active duty. Program participants will enter a signed agreement which states they understand they will incur an additional two months for every one month away from active-duty. When a participant re-enters active-duty after using the Career Intermission Program, they will have doubled their remaining enlistment. While using the program, participants will be unable to use tuition assistance. However, if eligible, use of the post 9/11 GI Bill is allowed but cannot be transferred to a dependent at that time.
