Buckley Attic open for business

BUCKLEY AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. --  "I remember when I was an Airman just starting out, I was pregnant and the attic had a bunch of maternity uniforms. Being able to use the attic and not have to worry about paying for new uniforms was really great."

Master Sgt. Pourshia Chambers-Motley recalled the time she most needed an Airman's Attic; and now as the Buckley Airman and Family Readiness Center NCO in charge, she is also the Buckley Attic facility manager and volunteer coordinator for the attic.

The Buckley Attic is a completely free facility where all Team Buckley members can donate items they no longer need, such as clothing and furniture, for other military members to use.

"When you're just starting out, there are a lot of costs," said Master Sgt. Troy Drasher, 460th Mission Support Group and Space Wing Staff first sergeant. "Life throws in a bunch of things that you didn't necessarily plan for. A new family might have moved here from sunny Florida and they need winter jackets. They can go to the Buckley Attic to get something to hold them over."

A few adjustments have been made to the attic recently including a name change from 'Airman's Attic', as a way to revamp the establishment into a multi-service facility.

"We wanted to make sure that everyone knew it was open to all branches," Chambers-Motley said. "We wanted to make it clear that this is Buckley's Attic."

The Buckley Attic is now open 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., Monday, Wednesday and Friday, excluding federal holidays and family days.

With the exception of "all-ranks" days and special cases, the attic is only open to service members E-1 through E-4 from all branches of service.

"It's for the people that are usually not making as much money," Chambers-Motley said. "It's a place where (service members) can go to get uniforms, household supplies, decorations, children's toys, car seats and furniture. It's a place to go where they don't have to worry about paying out of pocket for it."

All-ranks day will occur once a month, and will be open to everyone to utilize the facility.

The attic has also done away with the food pantry. Instead, food donations can now be accessed through Operation Warm Heart by contacting unit first sergeants. Service members in need of food are also able to visit off-base food pantry establishments. Along with that, first sergeants can distribute commissary gift cards to service members who request assistance.

Although the attic is only open to E-1 through E-4, they will also consider case-by-case situations.

"We won't turn anybody away that needs assistance," Chambers-Motley said.
