The Buckley Health and Wellness Center has recently changed their programs and availability, as of Oct. 1.

As part of force shaping and budget cuts in the Air Force, the Buckley HAWC and HAWCs across the Air Force have correspondingly cut manning and programs.

The Buckley HAWC has gone from five to two members in the last few months and has also changed their name to the Buckley Health Promotions Program.

"Right now our focus is on disease prevention, health promotion - specifically tobacco cessation - and obesity," said Alan Muriera, Buckley HPP health educator.

With the reduction of staff positions, the HPP has cut down considerably on their programs, but that doesn't mean those programs were entirely eliminated. Some fitness-related programs were handed over to the fitness center, such as personal training and gait analysis. Services such as the civilian health education workshop, fitness improvement program classes and other injury-preventing fitness services are no longer available but are being evaluated for potential continuation by other agencies. The previous physical training leader course has also been transferred to an online class.

However, the HPP still offers other programs and classes to all military, family members, and civilians. They will also take personal appointments on topics such as fitness, stress, nutrition and healthy lifestyles.

Available classes at the HPP include cooking demonstrations, healthy eating for fitness, obstetrics orientation class and tobacco cessation. Classes will be led by either a health professional or certified counselor. They also still have the BODPOD and relaxation room available.

"We are still here and still able to help," said Angela Peralta, Buckley HPP registered dietitian and nutritionist. "We're a free service. You can come see us as many times as you want and you can come get services done as many times as you want to help track your progress. You can email me, you can call me. We're here to make sure that Buckley stays healthy."
