BUCKLEY AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. -- Aurora Public Schools is one step closer to opening its new preschool through 8th grade school following a groundbreaking ceremony for the new APS Community Campus P-8 school Sept. 3 west of Buckley Air Force Base.

The new school is being built in order to accommodate the rapid student enrollment growth.

Students, parents, and base and community leaders gathered at the construction site where the APS superintendent, Board of Education vice-president, Community Campus P-8 principal, student and APS Community Campus P-8 planning committee member, and 460th Space Wing commander, all spoke on the future of the new school.

"The relationships we are forming with Buckley families are the key to the success of our new school," said Carrie Clark, APS Community Campus P-8 principal. "It is wonderful to have their support."

The new school will be just outside of Buckley's fence, benefitting the families and students of Team Buckley. The plans for a new pedestrian gate are underway to accommodate the commute from Buckley's base housing to the new school.

"The school is going to be huge for Buckley," said Col. John Wagner, 460th Space Wing commander. "If you look around, Buckley surrounds this school. If we put a pedestrian pathway so the kids and the parents can just walk from housing to the school, they won't have to worry about the traffic or anything like that. It's going to be great; it's right next door."

Construction on the school which will serve approximately 900 students, has begun and is scheduled to be completed by fall 2015.
