They are the ones who take care of things at home when servicemembers are deployed. The ones constantly thanked during promotion and awards ceremonies. They are part of the Team Buckley family.

They are the spouses.

The Buckley Spouses Group works to unite married servicemembers' "better halves," provide support to others when needed, and plan and host events for all family members to attend.

"We are a multi-service organization made up of officer, enlisted and civilian spouses who get together and help each other with problems and answer any questions they have," said Yadira Soto, Buckley Spouses Group president. "We also host special events and raise money for scholarships."

The group also engages in community outreach and volunteering programs. During the course of the last year, the spouses group has rallied donations for local charities and gave their time to assist those who were struggling. In addition, many of the fundraising activities create scholarship opportunities for spouses and children entering or continuing college.

"Last year, we were able to give one scholarship to a graduating senior for their freshman year at college," said Autumn Hammer, Buckley Spouses Group first vice president. "It was really nice to be able give $1,500 dollars to help the recipient with school."

However, despite all the progression the spouses group has made since revitalizing itself five years ago, the group would love to get more involvement in event planning and decision making, especially from male spouses.

"Don't get me wrong, I love being around strong diverse women," Soto explained, "but I would love the perspective of a few males."

The process of joining the Buckley Spouses Group is as simple as filling out a piece of paper and turning it into one of the group's leaders. They are available online via their website and Facebook, as well as in person at regular membership events such as the ice cream social that is scheduled 6 p.m. Aug. 18 at the Buckley Chapel Fellowship Hall.

Whether it's bringing spouses together for events or taking care of each other, the Buckley Spouses Group is there to make the life of a military spouse a little bit easier.
