460th CES warns of coyotes Published Feb. 26, 2014 By Airman Emily Amyotte 460th Space Wing Public Affairs BUCKLEY AIR FORCE BASE -- The 460th Civil Engineer Squadron released information and tips on how to avoid mishaps with coyotes. Many Colorado Front Range communities are home to coyotes, including Buckley and the surrounding areas. Coyotes are highly adaptive and can survive off any available food. Coyotes have acclimated to human food sources and thrive in habitats where it is easily accessible. Because abundance of food is available, a human-wildlife conflict exists. Follow these tips to help prevent an incident with coyotes: - Never feed them. Clear your yard of attractions including pet food, water sources, bird feeders and fallen fruit. - Secure trash in a container with a locking lid or wait until the morning of pick up to put out trash. - Always supervise your pets when outside, especially at dawn or dusk. Never leave cats or small dogs outside after dark. If you must leave your pet outside, secure it in a fully enclosed kennel. - If a coyote approaches you, yell and make loud noises, throw rocks or sticks in its direction, or spray it with a hose in attempt to scare it off. Report coyote sightings on the installation to the pest management office at 720-847-6396 or the natural resource manager at 720-847-6937. Report coyote sightings in the base housing area to the housing office at 720-847-5692.
