SAFETY: Buckley safety officials offer winter safety tips Published Sept. 19, 2013 460th Space Wing Safety Office BUCKLEY AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. -- With winter just around the corner, inevitable ice and snow bring possible dangerous driving hazards. Buckley safety officials offer these tips for staying safe in your vehicle this winter: · Check the exhaust system for leaks. Carbon monoxide may enter your vehicle. · Test the battery to make sure it's charged because the cold tends to draw more power. · Test your lights and turn signals. See and be seen. · Make sure the defroster and heater are working properly to keep your windshield clear. · Make sure your brakes are in good condition. · Inspect your wiper blades, belts and hoses for dry rot. · Be sure you have all-weather tires or snow tires. · Be sure your spare tire is ready for use. · And finally, winterize all fluids. It's also a good idea to keep a winter survival kit in the trunk of your vehicle. This should include a blanket, water, flashlight, extra cell phone battery, portable radio and kitty litter or sand to use for traction in case you get stuck. For assistance with winterizing your vehicle, contact your local automobile dealership or repair center. For more safety information contact the 460th Space Wing Safety Office at 720-847-SAFE.
