Members of Buckley AFB Diversity Council participated in an event March 29 to show support of One Book 4 Colorado, which is an initiative to encourage early literacy for children. The event consisted of council members assisting with sorting and shipping almost 15,000 books and ‘reading advocacy’ goodie bags for preschoolers all across the Denver Public School system area.

One Book 4 Colorado is a collaboration with the lieutenant governor’s office to promote early literacy by providing 75,000 copies of the same book in English and Spanish to four-year-old children across the state. Studies have shown that four-year-olds who have access to books or are read to by adults are more likely to be ready to read by the time they start Kindergarten.

The idea is to close the vocabulary gap by getting the book into the home of every four-year old in Colorado to foster a culture of reading, according to Tech. Sgt. Ruben Vasquez, 566th Intelligence Squadron mission scheduler.

The Diversity Council will be holding quarterly volunteer events supporting these programs in the local community to promote diversity and inclusion. For more information, contact Tech. Sgt. Ruben Vasquez at 720-677-3962 or ruben.vasquez.2@us.af.mil.
