Gretel’s Pantry held its grand opening on Nov. 25, 2020, at Buckley Air Force Base, Colo. A survey, which was taken in early 2020 by Buckley Spouses’ Group treasurer Rachel Crist, returned over 120 responses revealing the critical need for food assistance on Buckley AFB.

Various volunteers have worked tirelessly since late March to convert a portion of the Buckley Spouses’ Group Resource Center into a food pantry to help meet the needs of families on Buckley. A total revamp of the building allowed for the addition of four heavy duty food shelves built by service members which helped the project come to fruition.

“This is a perfect example of how just one idea can flourish into something great,” said Chief Master Sgt. Robert Devall, Buckley Garrison command chief.

The Buckley Spouses’ Group hopes to not only provide a food resource, but also a link between families and their key spouses and first sergeants.

“You always want to leave a base better than you found it, and this will certainly be an impactful improvement for years to come,” said Colonel Devin Pepper, Buckley Garrison commander.

The Buckley Spouse’s Group is gladly accepting donations for Gretel’s Pantry. However, food donations must be non-perishable, not expired, and not damaged. Along with food items, they also provide diapers, baby wipes, and cat and dog food.

For the time being, the pantry will be open for appointments as needed. The pantry will be open every week after payday.
