BUCKLEY AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. -- The 460th Space Wing Director of Retiree Activities, was honored by the Aurora United Veterans Committee as the 2009 Veteran of the Year during an official ceremony, April 26.
Retired Chief Master Sgt. Robert VanSciver accepted the award amid an audience of commanders, chiefs, first sergeants, fellow volunteers and friends.
"I was really overwhelmed and surprised that I was selected for this award," Chief VanSciver said.
As a volunteer supervisor Chief VanSciver provides information and referral services to retirees in northern Colorado and oversees the highly successful annual Retiree Appreciation Days.
"It is amazing to me just how many World War II veterans are still out there needing help with the benefits to which they are entitled," he added.
Retired Chief Master Sgt. Warren Tellgren, past president of the Aurora UVC, nominated Chief VanSciver for this prestigious award.
"Bob is dedicated to service for veterans and their families," Chief Tellgren said.
Chief VanSciver was praised for his commitment to veterans, their families, and the entire retirement community.
"I've always been impressed by his steadfast commitment and concern for America's heroes," Chief Tellgren said.
