Beginning Feb. 5, members of Team Buckley will be able to receive free tax preparation service at the Tax Center located in Room 42 of the Chapel.

The Tax Center can only prepare returns for active duty members and their spouses at this time, said Ms. Janet Russell, Tax Center representative. They may be able to help retirees at a later time, and they can only prepare taxes for Reservists and Guardsmen if they are on active duty during the tax season.

The center will be open Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The last day the Tax Center will be open is April 13. Those interested in using this benefit must make an appointment by calling 720-847-6995.

The preparers can also prepare non-Colorado state returns and multi-state returns.

The documents that people need to bring with them are:
-- All W-2s; social security cards for dependents
-- 1099-INT and 1099-DIV for interest and dividends
-- itemized statement for child care, including total amount paid, breakdown by child if there is more than one, and the provider's tax ID number
-- receipts or statements for education credits
-- statements for student loan interest paid
-- form 1098 mortgage interest statement
-- charitable contribution statements
-- for direct deposit, people need their bank's routing number and account number
-- a copy of last year's tax return is often very helpful.

People who were deployed during 2006 are tax exempt if they were in a combat zone, this is reflected on the W-2. Returning deployed members also have a 120 day extension after returning from a combat zone, said Ms. Russell.

Spouses can file joint returns with a power of attorney only if their spouse is outside of the United States, said Ms. Russell.

Last year the Tax Center saved members of Buckley more than $174,000 in tax preparation fees. The typical fee from a commercial tax preparer can run an individual between $100 and $150, Ms. Russell said.

When filing with the Tax Center people can expect their refunds within 10 days after the Internal Revenue Service receives their e-filed return.
