With Halloween right around the corner, remember to keep the safety of yourself and others a priority.

Children will be able to trick-or-treat in Buckley Family Housing from 5-8 p.m. Oct. 31. The 460th Security Forces Squadron will be providing patrol throughout base housing to ensure the safety of trick-or-treaters.

Here are a few tips to keep safe during the night:

Costume design:

· Costumes should use fire-retardant materials only
· Costumes should be loose so warm clothes can be worn underneath
· Costumes should not be long enough to cause a tripping hazard
· During hours of darkness, costumes should be made with light colored or reflective materials
· Flashlights or glow sticks should be carried or be a part of the costume

Pedestrians:

· Watch out for vehicles
· See and be seen
· Travel in familiar areas and along established routes
· Teach children to visit homes that are well-lit and never enter a stranger's home
· Teach children not to eat the treats until it is inspected by a parent or legal guardian

Drivers:

· Watch for children darting out from between parked vehicles
· Watch for children walking on roadways, medians and curbs
· Enter and exit driveways and alleys carefully
· At twilight and later in the evening, watch for children in dark clothing
