TSgt David Romanowsky receives purple Heart Published April 7, 2011 By Special to 460th Space Wing Public Affairs 460th Space Wing Public Affairs BUCKLEY AIR FORCE BASE, Colo- -- On March 22, Tech. Sgt. David S. Romanowsky received the Purple Heart for his valiant efforts in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. Lt. Col. David Scanlon, 566th Intelligence Squadron commander, presented the medal to Sergeant Romanowsky during a Colorado Avalanche hockey game. During his second volunteer deployment in Iraq, Sergeant Romanowsky demonstrated absolute fearlessness and mission dedication as his convoy received small arms fire and rocket-propelled grenades while conducting a route clearance mission. Sergeant Romanowsky immediately manned the gun turret and returned fire, killing one insurgent as he attempted to fire another RPG. Sergeant Romanowsky's superb decision-making skills and excellent attention to detail were evident during over 130 improvised explosive devices responses, post-blast investigations, and route clearance missions. The intelligence he gathered on bomb makers and IED networks aided in reducing the effects of IEDs in the Mosul area. Sergeant Romanowsky also received the Bronze Star Medal, Army Combat Action Badge, and Air Force Combat Action Medal for his heroic efforts. He was inducted into the Wounded Warrior Program and is the first person at Buckley Air Force Base to receive the Combat Action Ribbon.
